Flatweave, Jute and Animal Print Rugs: Natural Texture for Everyday Living

Some rugs are meant to be the star of the room. The rugs in this collection are the hardworking, easygoing pieces that make everything around them look better. Flatweave rugs lie low and stay put. Jute rugs bring the warm, organic texture of natural fiber. Cowhide and animal print rugs add a little personality and a lot of style.

I'm Janice Wells, the Rug Goddess, and in 25+ years of helping home and office clients, I have learned that these are some of the most versatile rugs you can own. They layer beautifully, work in coastal, farmhouse, modern, and traditional rooms, and handle spaces where a thick pile rug would get in the way.

They also have a few quirks you should know before you buy. Below, I explain the differences, how each one lives day to day, and which collections in this category fit your room.

Flatweave, Jute, or Animal Print: What's the Difference?

  • Flatweave rugs are woven on a loom without a pile, so the surface is flat and thin. Kilim and dhurrie rugs are traditional flatweave styles. Flatweaves can be wool, cotton, jute, or synthetic.
  • Jute rugs are made from a natural plant fiber with a soft golden tone and a nubby, braided, or woven texture. Many jute rugs are also flatweaves.
  • Animal print rugs include genuine cowhide rugs and rugs that use cow, zebra, cheetah, leopard, or deer patterns in wool or other fibers.

The Rugs in This Collection

Jute and natural fiber rugs

The Stanton Mochima collection is 100% jute, handmade in khaki, wheat, and golden wheat tones. The Nourison Terrazzo Jute rug is 100% jute in a braided flatweave with a natural and grey border. The KAS Kauai collection is handwoven in India from handspun jute blended with recycled PET yarn made from plastic bottles, and the Jaipur Living Naturals Tobago rug brings a classic jute texture. Brands include Stanton, Nourison, KAS, and Jaipur Living.

Wool and patterned flatweaves

The Crescent collections, including Ticking Stripe, Tattersall, Soliman Bay, and Boston Bay, bring tailored stripes and plaids in a flat, hand-loomed construction. Crescent Ticking Stripe is 100% New Zealand wool, and custom sizes are available on request. You will also find stripes, borders, and geometric designs from Momeni, the Cape, Castille, and Joshua collections from Couristan, and the Liora Manne Sorrento and Monaco collections from Trans-Ocean.

Cowhide rugs

The Couristan Chalet collection is made of 100% natural cowhide leather, ethically sourced, in flatwoven designs like Prism, Freeform, and Tile with a felt backing. The Agio cowhide rugs from Wayside are handcrafted from viscose jacquard and natural, undyed cowhide leather for a sleek modern look.

Animal print rugs

If you love the look of a hide without the hide itself, the Erin Gates Acadia collection by Momeni offers cow, deer, zebra, and cheetah prints. The Liora Manne Monaco Zebra rug brings a softer, taupe zebra pattern. For stair runners and custom rugs in leopard and cheetah designs, see my stair runners.

How These Rugs Live Day to Day

The benefits

  • Low profile. Flatweaves sit close to the floor, so doors clear them and chairs slide easily.
  • Great for layering. A large jute or flatweave base under a smaller patterned rug or cowhide adds depth to a room.
  • Natural texture. Jute and wool flatweaves add warmth without heavy pattern.
  • Easy to style. Neutral jute and simple stripes work with almost any furniture and color palette.

What to know before you buy

  • Jute and water don't mix. Spills can leave water marks, so jute is best in dry rooms, not bathrooms, mudrooms, or outdoors.
  • Jute sheds at first. Expect some fiber in the vacuum for the first few weeks. It settles down with time.
  • Jute feels firm. It is textured rather than plush. If you want softness underfoot, consider a wool flatweave or a jute and wool blend.
  • Flatweaves need a pad. A thin rug can slide and wrinkle without one. A good rug pad keeps it flat and safe.
  • Cowhide needs gentle care. Shake it out, vacuum without a beater bar, blot spills quickly, and never soak it.

Where These Rugs Work Best

  • Living rooms and family rooms, especially as a layered base under a patterned rug.
  • Dining rooms, where a flatweave lets chairs move in and out easily.
  • Bedrooms, with a large jute rug under the bed and a cowhide or smaller rug on the side.
  • Home offices and commercial offices, where a low profile helps rolling chairs.
  • Coastal and farmhouse homes, where natural fiber fits the relaxed style.

Frequently Asked Questions About Flatweave, Jute and Animal Print Rugs

What is a flatweave rug?

A flatweave rug is woven on a loom without a pile, so there are no knots or tufts standing up from the surface. The result is a thin, flat rug that is lightweight and easy to move. Kilims and dhurries are traditional flatweave styles, and flatweaves can be made from wool, cotton, jute, or synthetic fibers.

Is a flatweave rug the same as a kilim?

A kilim is one type of flatweave. The word kilim usually refers to a flatweave with traditional geometric patterns from Turkey, the Caucasus, Persia, or Central Asia. Every kilim is a flatweave, but not every flatweave is a kilim. Many modern flatweaves use stripes, plaids, or solid colors instead of tribal designs.

Are jute rugs soft?

Jute is one of the softer natural fibers, but it is still textured and firm compared with wool. It feels nubby underfoot rather than plush. If you want the look of jute with more softness, ask me about wool flatweaves or jute blends. Many rugs come in sample sizes, so you can feel the difference before you decide.

What is the difference between jute and sisal?

Both are natural plant fibers. Jute is softer, with a warm golden tone, and works best in lower-traffic rooms. Sisal is stiffer, more coarse, and more durable in high traffic, but it can feel rough underfoot. Both are sensitive to water. The natural fiber rugs in this collection are jute and jute blends.

Are jute rugs good for high-traffic areas?

Jute holds up well in living rooms, bedrooms, and dining rooms, but it is not my first choice for the busiest spots in your home, like a back door or a kitchen sink. Heavy traffic can flatten the weave over time. For those areas, I usually suggest a wool flatweave or an indoor-outdoor rug instead.

Can jute rugs get wet?

Jute should stay dry. Water can leave brown marks, and a jute rug that stays damp can develop mildew. Blot spills right away with a dry white cloth, and don't use water-based cleaning or steam. For bathrooms, mudrooms, lanais, and patios, choose an indoor-outdoor rug instead.

Do jute rugs shed?

Yes, most jute rugs shed a little when they are new. You will see some fiber in the vacuum for the first few weeks, and it settles down with time. Vacuum regularly with suction only or with the beater bar turned off, and rotate the rug every few months so it wears evenly.

Are your cowhide rugs real?

The Couristan Chalet cowhide rugs are made of 100% natural cowhide leather that is ethically sourced. The Agio cowhide rugs combine viscose jacquard with natural, undyed cowhide leather. The Erin Gates Acadia and Liora Manne Monaco rugs are patterned rugs with animal print designs rather than hides. Each product page lists its exact materials.

How do I clean a cowhide rug?

Shake your cowhide rug out regularly and vacuum it with the beater bar off. Blot spills right away with a damp cloth and mild soap, then let it air dry. Never soak a cowhide, put it in a washing machine, or steam clean it. Brushing in the direction of the hair keeps it looking smooth.

Do flatweave rugs need a rug pad?

Yes. Flatweaves are thin and lightweight, so they slide and wrinkle easily without a pad. A good pad keeps the rug in place, helps it lie flat, adds cushion, and protects your floor. Read Why Does Your Area Rug Need a Pad? to learn which pad suits a thin rug.

Are flatweave rugs good for dining rooms?

Flatweaves are one of my favorite choices for dining rooms. The low profile lets chairs slide in and out without catching, and crumbs vacuum up easily. A wool flatweave is more forgiving with spills than jute. Size the rug so there are about 24 inches of rug beyond the table on every side.

Can I layer a cowhide or animal print rug on a jute rug?

Yes, and it is one of the easiest ways to add personality to a room. Start with a large neutral jute or flatweave rug as your base, then add a smaller cowhide or patterned rug on top, slightly off center or angled. Keep the colors related so the layers look planned. I love helping clients put these combinations together.

Are flatweave and jute rugs machine washable?

Most are not. Jute, wool flatweaves, and cowhide should never go in a washing machine. Some small cotton or synthetic flatweaves are labeled washable, so always check the care instructions on the product page. My post Are Area Rugs Machine Washable? explains what is safe for each fiber.

Can I order a flatweave or jute rug in a custom size?

Many styles can be made to order. Crescent Ticking Stripe, for example, offers custom sizes on request, and many broadloom styles can be cut and bound to your exact measurements. Send me your room dimensions, or schedule a consultation, and I will tell you which styles can be made in the size you need.
